Dr. McCaffrey taught at Florida Atlantic University for 15 years prior to joining the nursing faculty at Mercer University. During her time at FAU, she served as the founding director of the school's Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program. Since becoming licensed as an advanced practice nurse, Dr. McCaffrey has worked in private practice and she has volunteered in migrant and underserved clinics. Dr. McCaffrey is currently receiving NIH funding to study the use of Sit-N-Fit Chair Yoga in older adults who are unable to exercise. Other research interests include: creating healing environments and the use of art and music to improve health and wellbeing.
Dr. McCaffrey has received external grant funding from: National Center for Complementary and Alternative Therapy, Astellas Pharmaceuticals, and the Institute for Museum and Library Services. She has numerous publications and she is author of the textbook, Doctor of Nursing Practice: Enhanced Professional Development, published by F. A. Davis. She is the recipient of numerous nursing awards, including the Sigma Theta Tau Founders Award; Editor Moore Copeland Award Excellence in Creativity; National Professional Issues Award, Society for the Arts Research Award in Healthcare; Bayada Award for Technological Advances in Nursing, National Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses National Professional Issues Award, Iota Xi Chapter Distinguished Research Award and the Nursing faculty of the Year Award at FAU.
