Shirley Rawlins began teaching in the Georgia Baptist School of Nursing in 1970 and continued as a faculty member and associate dean of the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of Mercer University. She is currently serving as an adjunct faculty member for the College teaching Fundamentals and Health Assessment and Adult Health Nursing to pre-licensure students. She has served as a clinical preceptor to graduate nursing students from Mercer and Grand Canyon University. She is a board certified specialist in Adult Health Nursing and has served as an item writer for the Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist certification exam for the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Her areas of expertise are adult health, parish nursing, and disaster nursing. She currently serves as a supervisor in Disaster Health Services for the American Red Cross and has responded to numerous local, state, and national disaster relief operations. She teaches disaster training courses to volunteers and has served as a shelter manager for the Red Cross. She has been awarded the Leadership and the Nursing Achievement Awards by the Red Cross as well as the Distinguished Alumnae and Edna Earle Teal awards by the College of Nursing. She has also been inducted into the College’s Hall of Honor. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International and the Pi Gamma Chapter of STTI. She is currently serving on the Alumnae Board of Directors for the School/College of Nursing. She has done research and publication related to family caregivers.
