GBANS Volunteer Opportunities Fall 2009

 

1. Dream House for Medically Fragile Kids

 

Dream House teaches families and communities how to help children with complex health issues thrive at home. A unique transition care program that provides the education, skills training, home modifications, equipment and health care supplies that enable families and empower communities to care for their medically fragile children at home.

Mainstreet Fair in Lilburn City

Dates:  Saturday, Sept. 12th 2009 11a-3p

Volunteer Opportunity:  Assist families w/children, work first aide station, take blood pressures/blood sugars with Registered Nurses

2. Lazarus Health Day is a street fair for the homeless to meet physical needs as well as social needs.

 

Special Event-

Dates:  Sunday, Sept. 20th 2009 2p-9p-(shifts available)

Location: Ellis Street in Downtown Atlanta between Courtland St. and Peachtree Center

Volunteer Opportunity:  Assist with health and wellness stations and resources

3. Senior Connection

 

Senior Connection’s focus is on helping seniors continue to make choices that help them to remain independent and in their own homes for as long as possible. The volunteer opportunity is called SPARC.  It is a group of small events that allow seniors to receive health and wellness information and services. You will work at a service station doing blood pressures, blood glucose, and cholesterol screenings, registration, exit table, vaccination table, or flow control.

DeKalb SPARC sites and dates (all sites will have events that will run from 10am-2pm—volunteers need to be on site no later than 9:30am):

Senior Connections/North DeKalb Senior Center---October 1st (Translation services needed) 5238 Peachtree Road, Chamblee, GA 30341                                                              This will serve North DeKalb Senior Center participants and Chamblee Senior Residences residents, and those in that community.

Ashford Parkside in the Blair Building---October 14th  (translation services needed) 3522 Blair Circle, NE Atlanta, GA 30319                                                                                This will serve Ashford Parkside and Ashford Landing Senior Residences residents, and those in that community

Lithonia Senior Center---October 20th 2484 Bruce Street Lithonia, GA 30058              This will serve Lithonia and Scottdale Senior Center participants, Lou Walker participants, and those in that community

 The Mack Love Building ---October 22nd 1340 McConnell Drive, Decatur, GA 30030 To serve participants of Life Enrichment, NORC, Parks and Recreation, and residents of Clairmont Oaks, and the surrounding community

South DeKalb Senior Center---November 5th 1931 Candler Road, Decatur, GA 30032   To serve South DeKalb and DeKalb-Atlanta participants, Beulah Baptist Church members, and the surrounding community

 Austin Drive Senior Campus---November 18th 1989 Austin Drive Decatur, GA 30032

4. United Cerebral Palsy of GA

 

United Cerebral Palsy of Georgia has grown into a comprehensive service organization offering a range of supports for people living with any developmental disability (not just those with cerebral palsy). The array of services includes early intervention and therapy in an inclusive child care setting, engaging day supports for seniors, employment services, in-home supports, community living supports, after school care, and day supports.

5. AID Gwinnett

AID Gwinnett is the AIDS Service Organization covering Gwinnett, Rockdale and Newton Counties in Georgia.  Services include:

  • Medical care for persons living with HIV
  • HIV prevention education programs
  • Emergency housing assistance for persons living with HIV
  • Case Management

 

Special Event-

AIDS Walk

Dates:  Sunday, October 18th noon-4:00pm or until finished at Piedmont Park

Volunteer Opportunity:  Assist with fundraising and participating in the Walk for a cure with the Georgia Baptist Student Nurses

6. Welcome House

 

Welcome House is tradition in which the Student Nurses of Georgia Baptist prepare a warm Thanksgiving meal for a halfway house in downtown Atlanta. It is a wonderful opportunity to give of yourself and provide a much needed service to your community.  You can participate by cooking, serving, or both.  It is our biggest event of the semester and we need all your help regardless if you have met your volunteer requirement.

Date:  Saturday, November 21st 10am- 3pm Atlanta, GA

Volunteer Opportunity:  Cook and Serve Thanksgiving to Welcome House, More information will be given as the day approaches
