Prior to arriving at Mercer University, Dr. Heo served twelve years on the faculty at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Indiana University.  Following completion of her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Kentucky, her research continued to focus on the area of heart disease and most specifically in the area of quality of life in patients with heart failure.  Her research included examining quality of life factors in the areas of physical symptoms and associated factors of self–care, psychosocial affects, neurohormones, and inflammation.  Her research has been extramurally funded by the American Nurses Foundation and the American Heart Association.  She is the author and co-author of more than 50 research based articles and abstracts focusing on heart failure and chronic disease, with three manuscripts noted as the top ten cited by Heart and Lung.  While she has maintained a robust research platform, she is also a respected instructional faculty member for her classroom teaching in the areas of philosophy and theories, research methodology, evidence-based practice, and supporting doctoral students in completion of their research.  She has received honors for both her research, research reviews, and teaching, including the multiple years of accolades as one of the Top 10 best reviewers for the European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing and Reviewer of the Year for the Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing.  Noted for her concern for humanity, contributions to the profession of Nursing, and her mentoring of others, she was honored as one of the 2018 Great 100 Nurses of Arkansas.  She is a fellow in the Heart Failure Society of America and the American Heart Association, Council of Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing.
